PET OF THE MONTH

Spike

Spike

Spike is a 7.5-year-old Collie Mix.

Spike came into the clinic in June of 2008 for his annual exam and vaccines. At this visit it was noticed that Spike had moderate tartar build up and inflammation along his gum line that would require a dental cleaning under general anaesthetic.
Spike’s owners agreed that the best choice for Spike would be to perform the dental cleaning and booked an appointment for 2 weeks following the initial appointment.

Spike Operation

If Spike had not had the dental cleaning it could be very possible that at some point the roots of his teeth may have eventually become very infected due to the increased tartar build up. It is also very possible that over time a tooth may have become fractured due to the weakening of the roots.

Spike recovered very well from the anaesthetic with beautifully white teeth, and his owners agreed to make an attempt at brushing his teeth to prolong the tartar build up once again. Spike was also sent home with a dental diet to help keep his teeth cleaner for longer.

Dental

Notice the severe inflammation of both the above animals’ gums. Both pets had to have teeth removed due to the damage that occurred over years of tartar build up and bacteria. Both of the above pets presented to the clinic with symptoms of inappetance, weight loss, runny eyes and unpleasant odour.

We ask that all clients please always watch and maintain their pet(s) oral health, as it is equally as important as our own!
