PET OF THE MONTH

Audi

Audi is an 11 yr German Shepherd intact (not spayed) female.

Audi was brought into Oro-Medonte Veterinary Services on March 23, 2007 with a golf ball-sized lump on her stomach next to her nipple. The lump was quite hard and the owners had noticed a clear discharge.

Audi had not been spayed and it was presumed that the lump may be a mammary tumour.

Radiographs were taken to ensure there was no further damage internally to her heart or lungs due to possibility of cancer. With the radiographs showing a clear heart and lungs, it was decided that it would be best to remove the lump and spay Audi at this time.

If cancer were present in this photo you would see a snowflake effect across Audi's lungs.

Once removed the lump was sent to Vita-Tech Laboratories for histopathology to determine the severity. After a few days and an amazing recovery the histo results returned stating that the lump was a non-invasive mammary carcinoma (mammary tumour), and that removal should be curative.

Audi has recovered quite well and seems to have much more energy and stamina. We at Oro-Medonte Veterinary Services are very pleased with the results and recommend everyone spay and neuter their pets.
